Contemporary Artist & Architect — Paris

Nour Aouissaoui

Tunisian contemporary artist and architect based in Paris. At the intersection of art, architecture, and philosophy, she develops an abstract visual language that explores the relationship between chaos and harmony, destruction and reconstruction, darkness and illumination.

Biography

Nour Aouissaoui is a Tunisian contemporary artist and architect based in Paris. Born in Oman and raised between Oman and Dubai, she has also lived in Mauritius and Southern Italy, in Sicily, before establishing herself in Paris. Her journey across the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and the Indian Ocean has profoundly shaped her artistic identity, cultivating a distinctive sensitivity to cultural diversity, landscapes, architecture, materiality, and light.

Trained as an architect, she pursued advanced studies in BIM Management at École des Ponts ParisTech and ESTP Paris. She is currently completing a PhD in Architecture at Paris-Malaquais, where her research investigates the poetic and sensory dimensions of architectural space, drawing on philosophical approaches to human experience and perception.

At the intersection of art, architecture, and philosophy, Aouissaoui develops an abstract visual language that explores the relationship between chaos and harmony, destruction and reconstruction, darkness and illumination.

Her paintings emerge through an intuitive yet architecturally informed process of layering, accumulation, erasure, and transformation. Through expressive gestures, rich textures, and vibrant contrasts, she creates compositions in which matter becomes memory, color becomes emotion, and light becomes a symbol of renewal.

Her series FROM CHAOS TO LIGHT (2025–2026) embodies this artistic philosophy. Exploring transformation, resilience, and the emergence of beauty from disorder, the collection invites viewers to experience painting as both a physical and emotional journey.

Influenced by her architectural research and her experiences across different cultures and landscapes, from the Mediterranean shores of Sicily to the tropical environments of Mauritius, Aouissaoui approaches the canvas as an evolving space — a place where structure meets spontaneity, where imperfections become meaningful, and where chaos gives birth to new possibilities.

Her artistic practice has been presented through exhibitions and international creative projects in Paris and abroad. In October 2026, she presents her solo exhibition FROM CHAOS TO LIGHT in Paris, coinciding with Art Basel Paris.

Architecture taught me to understand space. Doctoral research taught me to question what lies beyond it. Painting taught me to feel what words cannot express.

Artist Statement

I approach painting as an exploration of what remains, what disappears, and what can emerge from transformation.

My work begins with chaos — not as disorder to be eliminated, but as a state of possibility. Through successive layers of paint, gestures, textures, and erasures, I construct surfaces that carry the traces of their own evolution. Each intervention responds to what came before it. Nothing is entirely lost; fragments remain, sometimes visible, sometimes concealed, becoming part of a new visual language.

My background in architecture and doctoral research has profoundly shaped the way I perceive space, matter, and light. Architecture taught me to understand structure and spatial relationships, while my research into the poetic and sensory experience of space led me to question how environments hold memory, evoke emotion, and shape human perception.

Painting extends these investigations beyond the boundaries of architecture. The canvas becomes a space of experimentation, where precision encounters intuition, control gives way to spontaneity, and materiality acquires an emotional dimension.

I work through accumulation, interruption, destruction, and reconstruction. Colors collide, forms dissolve, and new relationships emerge. What initially appears fragmented gradually reveals its own internal coherence. I am interested in this moment of transition, when uncertainty begins to generate meaning and apparent disorder finds an unexpected balance.

Light occupies a fundamental place in my practice. I do not see it merely as a visual phenomenon, but as a presence capable of transforming our perception of matter and space. It reveals without entirely exposing, illuminates without erasing, and allows what has been obscured to acquire a new existence.

In my series FROM CHAOS TO LIGHT, this exploration becomes both a material process and a metaphor for the human experience. The paintings reflect the tensions between fragility and strength, memory and renewal, destruction and creation. They suggest that transformation does not require the disappearance of the past, but rather its integration into something new.

Ultimately, I do not seek to impose a single interpretation. I want my paintings to create a space for contemplation, where viewers can encounter their own memories, emotions, and perceptions.

For me, painting is not about escaping chaos. It is about discovering what can emerge from within it.
